Hurricane Season 2024 is officially a wrap as cooler weather begins to settle into the central
Florida region. There's been more than a couple of days of brisk winds and chilly temperatures dropping things down into the 50's and 60's brrrr, but definitely cold enough to have the natives bundling up and busting out their Uggs.
This year's tropical season produced eight named storms, with eleven of those becoming hurricanes. Five storms intensified to major hurricanes exceeding winds of 110 mph. Overall, things fell within the predicted ranges for named storms and hurricanes issued by NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center in the 2024 August Hurricane Season Outlook. But as far as fun surf goes, this season was pretty underwhelming for central Florida with a ton of wind and mostly small wave sizes. The sandbars are not optimum either, with the middle and inside breaks completely shut down in the neighborhood thanks to shifting sand along the coquina shelf.
It hasn't been flat, there's been plenty of breaking surf in the area, but the onshore winds have been relentless making surfing conditions pretty un-fun. I've also been rehabbing old injuries and dealing with arthritic joints, so I haven't been in a rush to aggravate things paddle-battling the never ending chop. I even drove south to try and catch a post-frontal boundary swell in the Palm Beaches (or refraction swell as we used to call it). That venture was mostly a skunk so... I've managed just a dozen sessions for September, October, and November.
I'm still searching for my stoke, and hoping to crack some more lips in the near future. But it's time for a new trajectory. Winter is coming, new custom orders are here, let's drop some new content on this site... stay tuned! Hope you're surfing where you are.
These guys on tour right now. Go catch 'em. Should be a rager
